Friends of South Side Park

Friends of South Side Park (FOSSPark) plays an important role in South Side Park through its grassroots advocacy work.

Since 2015, FOSSPark has organized park clean-up days, trail building, native habitat restoration & reforestation. We lead the implementation of projects such as the Jurassic Valley Ecological Restoration Plan.

We continuously advocate for our park’s improvement. We also contribute to the implementation of ‘Stand-Alone’ projects identified in the 2018 Master Plan.

Mission & Values

Friends of South Side Park (FOSSPark) protects, improves, revitalizes and promotes the South Side Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

FOSSPark strives for all people to enjoy & share this treasured space; preserving the Park’s rich heritage of its industrial past, while fostering collaboration, resources, and funding for a vital future.

Our Impact

Another key development has been the completion of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy’s Jurassic Valley Ecological Study. This study, by ecologist Erin Copeland and partially financed by the Laurel Foundation, guides efforts to reforest the area. Allegheny GoatScape has been in Jurassic Valley for at least four weeks each year since 2017 to remove invasive vines and other plants. The goats have been invaluable partners in the fight to reforest the Valley. FOSSP has planted over 900 native trees and shrubs in and near the Valley in the past four years.
